Davison IQ winners

Davison School was recently approached by Search Laboratory Ltd to take part in a Global Search Marketing Free IQ test. We were asked to choose just two pupils to participate in this national IQ quiz to find winning schools throughout Great Britain. Two girls were chosen by departments to take part in the quiz, Florence Scordoulis and Hannah Hide both in Year 11. They were given passwords and entered the IQ test. We are very pleased to announce that Davison CE High School for Girls came joint 1st with two other schools for the south region, with an average score of 123. Very well done to both Hannah and Flo.The idea of the IQ quiz was to promote intelligence for the next generation, their aim was to '..get the message across that clever is cool...'. To view one of the write-ups follow the link below, and see Davison school in print.IQ Test Results

Tribute to Muriel Thomas - Former Headteacher at Davison

Tribute to MurielMuriel Thomas was born in 1927 in a small mining village in South Wales. Her father was an official at one of the local collieries and her mother had been a teacher. Enid remembers being delighted to have a little sister and rather proud of being allowed to help push the big pram up the steep hill, which led to their home.Behind the house was a small plantation of pine trees leading to the lower slopes of the mountain, rough grass, rather stunted trees, rocks and sheep. This was their playground as they grew up, and they were joined in their games, after a few years, by a brother. They were allowed to wander the area with a freedom that is all but unimaginable for today's children. Muriel was always adventurous, full of good ideas and usually led the way in their expeditions. At three years of age she started school and was soon reading not only her school primers but any printed matter she could lay her hands on; newspapers; posters; bottle labels; church magazines---you name it-she read it! She passed the Grammar school entrance exam at ten years and made her 'colourful' way to the fourth form when she passed the matriculation exam at fourteen years. Two years later she passed the Higher School certificate in English, History and economics but was too young to go to university. The following year she was accepted at Exeter and was delighted to find herself in such attractive surroundings. Possibly the years she spent there were amongst her happiest as she met charming, interesting people. She made life-long friends at Exeter, two of whom are with us today to pay tribute to 'Taffy' as she was always known to them. She graduated in 1949 and started her teaching career in a school in Hamble. In 1956 volunteers were sought to teach English to Hungarian people who had fled their country after the failed uprising. Muriel, always eager for a challenge, volunteered and spent two very interesting years working for The British Council for Aid to Refugees in Yorkshire and Sussex. She had many fascinating tales to tell of this period and again made good friends, with whom she was in contact until she died.In 1958 Muriel returned to traditional teaching when she was appointed to the English department at Davison School. Throughout her time there she was held in great respect and affection by staff and pupils alike. She was an inspiring teacher who encouraged the girls to share her joy of literature. Mrs Fox recalls overhearing an inspector say, 'I have only come to enjoy hearing Miss Thomas give one of her Chaucer lessons!' She took great interest in the girls after they had left school and many of them continued to keep in touch with her. For many years Muriel produced a lively and interesting School Magazine, which reflected the high standard of English within the school. She was also involved in the production of school plays and fostered an interest in the school choir and orchestra. She was an experienced walker and Mrs Benwell was very happy when she agreed to help with the Youth Hostelling trips in the Lake District and South Devon - Muriel was always the 'pacemaker', the rest of the party bringing up the rear!It was about this time that many changes in education were being introduced and Muriel was always sympathetic to the needs of the staff and their problems in making adjustments to the new National Curriculum. She continued to support and encourage them until she retired in1988.As a child Muriel was brought up to attend Church faithfully, which she continued to do throughout her life. She was a regular worshipper here at St Georges, a PCC member and a willing participant in its many activities. She was fondly known as their 'official photographer' with examples of her generous contributions in the vestibule. One could always rely on Muriel being there with her trusty camera to record events for posterity, generously handing out photos after any occasion. She was a person who truly loved her neighbour as herself. She was interested in people of all ages and backgrounds, but perhaps had a special delight in young people who clearly loved her. To her great nieces and nephews, Josie, Emily, Harry, Bethan, Rhian, Rhys, Emma, Martha, William and Hannah she was 'Mu' a dear and generous friend. William Huw and Caitlin sadly have had little time to know her. Compassionate and loving she willingly gave emotional and practical help and support to any in need. From our great love of Muriel comes our great grief that we shall no longer have her physical presence in our earthly lives. 'Go in Peace Mu with our love. You shall be joyfully remembered by each of us.'

World Book Day

Thursday 4th March Davison celebrated World Book Day. The day started with a visit from 30 Springfield School children, who were invited to Davison LRC to share the enjoyment of books. They were read to, in small groups, by our Bookbuddie girls and the Worthing Herald's photographer came to take photos.Throughout the morning girls had an opportunity to come to the LRC where they could spend their £1 voucher at Waterstones bookstall, who were kind enough to bring a wide selection of their book stock.Lunchtime saw a very busy and buzzing session in the LRC. Emily Sayers year 11 designed a team quiz based on Murder, Crime with a touch of Vampire Blood! we had 10 teams enter, including 2 staff teams. The winning team each received an Easter Egg. While the team quiz was busy, the other end of the LRC was entertained by two year 11 girls, Flossie Marriott and Gabi King, playing guitar and singing. We had a variety of competitions and quizzes, from 'guess the staff fav. Childhood book Character' to the monthly general knowledge quiz, and a photo-caption competition for both girls and staff to enter, as well as a drawing competition designed by Beth Mepham year 10. The whole day proved very successful.HAPPY WORLD BOOK DAY

Gifted and Talented Indoor Athletics

Since the start of the new year gifted and talented athletes from Downsbrook Middle School and Chesswood Middle School have attended weekly sessions in preparation for February's Worthing Cluster Indoor Athletics Competition. Pupils from across keys stages had the chance for one to one coaching from Davison's very own Year 10 G.C.S.E Physical Education students and the girls proved fantastic mentors and roles models for the younger children. They all did a super job of coaching, recording, timing and encouraging the younger pupils. They were a credit to the school. Well done and thank you! I would also like to thank community athletics coach Alan Denyer for leading at the Chesswood Middle School sessions. Last but not least let's not forget the Chesswood and Downsbrook pupils and all of their teachers. You were fab! Good luck in the competition!Dani Baker Davison/St Andrews Cluster

Up, Up & Away with Sussex Air Ambulance

The Sussex Air Ambulance Service visited Davison during assemblies to inform students about the service they provide along the Sussex coastline. Since its launch in 2007 the Air Ambulance has gone from strength to strength, last year alone the crews have flown over 460 missions. They would not be able to do this without the continued support and generosity of the Sussex community. It costs £1.6 million a year to keep the Sussex Air Ambulance flying over our skies. The charity relies almost entirely on public donations. For further information please visit www.sussexairambulance.co.ukTo support the Air Ambulance Service we held a Funky Footwear Day. Students and staff donated 50p to wear their favourite and most colour footwear to school for the day. Together we raised a fabulous £350.00!

Health & Beauty Fundraiser raises the roof!

On Tuesday 9th February the Friends of Davison School held their fundraising event, 'Style Evening'. The FODS transformed the school hall into a beauty salon, ready for students, their mum's, aunties, grandmothers and friends, to come along for an evening of fun and pampering. They were able to enjoy mini manicures, mini make ups, eyebrow waxing, relaxing massage and hair styling tips. Members from Worthing Health Trainers joined us for the evening and had a stall full of information and advice on how to lead a healthier life.We would like to thank all of the beauticians and hair stylists who participated in 'Style Evening' and gave their services and expertise for free. Beauty students from Chichester and Northbrook Colleges manicured nails and gave mini makeovers. Hair Stylists from the Richard John Academy created beautiful hair styles. Without everyone's support and generosity 'Style Evening' would not have been possible. Many of these ladies are former Davison girls, who jumped at the chance to help their former school. There was a fabulous raffle with top prizes of gift vouchers worth £25.00 and a beautiful nominations bracelet donated by VJG Jewellers. The evening was great fun as everyone enjoyed trying out new ideas for hair and make-up and gained knowledge and information on healthy living. We raised £350.00 towards our new school project, which is to build a canopied area in between the MFL and Science blocks.
Geography trip to Icon Live

On the 23rd February numerous girls from years 9 and 10 visited a jewellery distribution centre and office branch in Burgess Hill, Icon Live.Icon is a large company who imports jewellery made in India and China and sells in large retail stores such as our local supermarkets and high street fashion shops like New Look. Although we may not know this, Icon design and produce of all the jewellery in these shops. For example they produce the jewellery 'George' for Asda and 'F&F' for Tesco. So when most of us actually thought it was the shop's own brand, it is really Icon who are the manufacturers and designers. Although they make sure they sell different ranges to each shop to match the store, and keep the shop's jewellery range unique.During our visit we were invited into the conference room where we enjoyed the viewing of several videos about the company and were taken on a visual tour of the building and factories they own in the business park. However we also had the chance to ask our geographical questions we'd been saving like 'Why did you chose the Burgess Hill site for you company base?' along with everything else we were curious about. With a quick stop off at MacDonald's on the way home it seemed as though everyone had had an enjoyable trip and learnt all about Icon Live.
