Southern Schools Book Awards Evening - 13th January

Friday 13th January, a dark and chilly night, hordes of teenagers determinedly moving towards a gothic building on the south coast...yes, Roedean was hosting the eighth Southern School Book Awards (SSBA) and seven girls from Davison CE High School were amongst the audience. This year's shortlisted novels were Being Billy by Phil Earle, Ghost of a Chance by Rhiannon Lassiter, Wasted by Nicola Morgan, The Double Life of Cassiel Roadnight by Jenny Valentine and Numbers Two: the Chaos by Rachel Ward. The SSBA presentation evening, enthusiastically hosted by last year's winner Lucy Christopher, was attended by 290 students and staff from 34 state and independent schools in Kent and Sussex. The students, mostly aged 13 to 14, had read and voted for all five titles on the shortlist and were on the edge of their theatre seats, anticipating the results of the voting. We, from Davison School had really good seats very near the front, so all the excitement from the stage seemed to be aimed right at us. Annis Ferrey from year 9 volunteered to go on stage to collect the book vouchers for Davison girls, as each pupil received a £7 book voucher. After the schools had received their book tokens, the gold and silver envelopes were produced with a flourish and the tension was palpable as Lucy requested the traditional drum roll just before revealing the results. And the winner of the 2011 award was Jenny Valentine with The Double Life of Cassiel Roadnight. The Highly Commended category was awarded to Numbers Two: the Chaos by Rachel Ward.

Take Over Day 2011 at the charity Breakthrough.

Rosie Greco-Williams and Rebecca Hoibak Year 10 students from Davison High School for Girls were given the fantastic opportunity to visit the Head Office and Research Centre of Breakthrough Breast Cancer, in Holborn, London.Rosie and Rebecca's storyWe started our exciting day by travelling up to London to meet Dr Sarah Rawlings, Head of Policy & Public Health. She gave us lots of interesting information about the history of Breakthrough. Sarah then gave us a tour of the office's (which were really pink!) and we met Chris Askew who is the Chief Executive, he had grown a pink moustache to help raise awareness of prostate cancer Then we were invited into a meeting with the Head of Health Service, Ruairi O'Connor, and his colleague Georgina. They asked us some interesting questions and wanted to know our opinion on how to promote Breakthrough Breast Cancer to students of our age. They were thrilled with our ideas! It made us feel like we had really contributed to helping them with their campaign. After lunch we were escorted to the Breakthrough Research Centre in Kensington. We met many inspirational scientists who work really hard hoping to find cures for breast cancer. This can take years of research which is so valuable to many people who are suffering from breast cancer. We even got to wear real lab coats on our tour! The tour and talk was a great way for us to end our day and we feel privileged to have been involved in Take Over Day 2011.On returning to Davison we were delighted to see our very own Mr Clayton, Lead tutor and Geography teacher helping to raise awareness of prostate cancer. He had grown his very own fabulous moustache! We would like to thank everyone at Breakthrough for making us feel so welcome. Both of us found the whole day rewarding and inspirational. Good luck Breakthrough in your continued fundraising efforts and we wish you every success in your ground breaking research.

Clothes Show Live 2011

So last Wednesday (the 7th of December) I went to the 'Clothes Show Live' in the Birmingham NEC on a school trip. And to be honest I thought it was going to have to be pretty good considering I had got up at 5:30 that morning. So when to my delight after the 4 hour coach journey we pulled up, still half asleep in a cold Birmingham car park, I wasn't exactly jumping the gun to get in. However after getting into the main hall all my preconceptions of a 'clothes show' seemed to be wiped aside. Hundreds of people swept along in the frilled, fake tanned, French manicured fun. After attempting to work our way round the main hall for about half an hour we conceded defeated and bought a map that seemed to have quadrupled in price since when we went in?? And sat down with our free ice cream to plan the course of action!! Personally I really liked the purple and blue zones, the purple zone because it had less conventional fashion that was really fun to look round and it had a really vibrant feel, and the blue zone because I loved some of the vintage boutiques. The show was amazing and I had never really been to anything like it before so it was a new experience, with BB from channel 4!! I noticed loads of winter knit, granddad jumpers around and about so I think that is a big trend at the moment along with high waisted shorts and jeans. Also quite a lot of distressed denim jackets, the biker feel and one pieces!! *cringe*, although I'm not sure we'll see loads of them on the high street- at least I hope not. By the end of the day the frenzied fashionistas were starting to get me down, and I'm still unsure as to why a fashion show put porridge and Colgate into a freebie bag, but I think I will definitely be looking out for Clothes Show Live next year, if I've recovered from this one enough!! I'd definitely recommend this trip to anyone thinking of going, just be prepared for an onslaught of manic materials, macho models and mad merchandise-all to be taken in moderation. Thank you, thank you, thank you Miss Green for organising this trip, I had a great day.Molly Allwright

Netball Nationals - Match Report

On Saturday 26th November, Mrs Cox and the Davison Year 11 netball team braved the elements to compete in the first round of the netball nationals, held on the cliff-top courts of Roedean school. Armed with hoodies, scarves and flasks, the squad, in a group with only one other non private school, did amazingly well. We drew the first match 1-1 against Warden Park. The second and fourth matches vs Brighton college and Sion, we lost 4-5 and 5-7 respectively, although still gaining points for getting at least half the goals that the opposition scored. The other two matches, we won 7-2(vs Ardingly) and 5-2 ( against the host side Roedean.)These scores enabled us to continue to the semi finals, going through second on the pool on goal difference, where we played Burgess Hill. It was a close match, with the score level at 2-2 at half time. Unfortunately, the final score was 5-3 to Burgess Hill, but the team can be very proud of their achievement, as some excellent netball was played over the course of the day, and the team spirt was outstanding. So congratulations to:Amelia Smith, Beth Leeding, Katie Burling, Lauren Baillie, Rebecca Bond, Rosanna O'Mahoney, Rymy Sia and Saskia Tappin. And thank you to Mrs Cox and Miss Gearing for taking us there and supporting us despite the freezing weather.Rebecca Bondyear 11
