CitizenshipEvery pupil at Davison is a citizen, irrespective of how proficient she may be as a student of English, Maths, Science and the many other subjects she may study. Therefore, the teaching and development of Citizenship plays a very important and necessary role within our school. Our role is to introduce our students to a broad range of issues, the intention being to 'open their eyes, ears and minds', and to provide numerous opportunities for them to become informed, responsible and active citizens within their immediate, local and global communities. The teaching of Citizenship at Davison extends beyond the one hour per week discrete Global Citizenship lessons and Flexidays. It underpins our caring Christian ethos, and is evident everywhere - in assemblies, within our pastoral structure and in our day to day teaching where topics drawn from Citizenship are included in planning or are referred to during discussion. There is also a range of opportunities for the pupils to put into Citizenship teaching into practice - the electoral process for the prefect team or the Junior Governing Body, and the EcoSchool Committee, pupils are encouraged to give active service to the school, for example being a form captain, being a member of a sports team, a drama performance or the choir, being a member of the Red Hat Review editorial team, or giving service to the community, for example helping at the MENCAP sports day, being a Reading Buddy at Springfield or giving up Saturday morning to help with Youth University. Since 2000, in recognition of the work they do and the free time they give up, volunteer YU Leaders have been successfully nominated in seven applications for The Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Award.
